The Assam government’s brand new proposal to set-up a new national park ‘Raimona’ would make it the state’s sixth National Park – if approved. Unveiling the map of this proposed new park (to be located in a militancy ravaged reserve forest), forest minister Parimal Suklabaidya said the process for approving ‘Raimona National Park’ has already been initiated by the Government of Assam.
Kaziranga, Manas, Dibru-Saikhowa, Manas and Orang are the existing national parks in Assam, and if all goes as planned, the Raimona will share contiguous forest patches of Phipsoo Wildlife Sanctuary and Jigme Singye Wangchuk National Park of Bhutan, creating a transboundary conservation landscape of more than 2,400 sq km2.
